What is Demographic targeting definition ?

Demographic targeting was the first form of targeting used on the Internet.

Demographic targeting allow advertisers to reach specific audiences according to age, gender, income, ...

On the Internet, demographic targeting can be based on website audience profiles, registration data, behavioral data or third party data.

In the first case, a website or a website section is chosen as media vehicle because a strong proportion of his audience belongs to the advertiser’s demographic target. It is the same principle for newspaper and magazine advertising. This form of targeting is losing ground in favor of more sophisticated targeting techniques.

Registration data targeting uses profile elements given by website visitors or users. For instance, Hotmail or Facebook collect users’ demographic data. The targeting is done dynamically on the Internet site by the use of cookies or signing-up.
